Battle of the School Bands

STUDENT MUSICIANS BATTLE TO PERFORM AT BASSINTHEGRASS

12 April 2013

Darwin’s Rambutan Jam Band has been crowned the 2013 Battle of the School Bands winners at a hotly contested final tonight.

The band, made up of students from Kormilda College and Darwin High School, was one of 17 from throughout the Northern Territory who fought it out for top spot and will now perform at BASSINTHEGRASS in Darwin on 25 May.

Also scoring a gig at the popular music festival is Joshua Goodrem, of Darwin High, who took out the category for a duo or soloist.

Minister for Education, Peter Chandler, said this year’s competition was fierce.

“The annual Battle of the School Bands produces the very best musical talent in our schools,” Mr Chandler said.
“To be able to perform on such a big stage at BASSINTHEGRASS and to thousands of fans is a wonderful opportunity and one this Government is thrilled to be able to provide to the Battle of the School Bands winners.

“The competition supports arts education in our schools with students gaining credits towards their music studies and aids the development of talented musicians who will take their place in the Territory’s booming youth music scene.” Minister for Major Events, Matt Conlan, congratulated tonight’s winners.

“I know it will be a huge thrill for the Battle of the School Bands winners to perform at BASSINTHEGRASS alongside some of the biggest names in the country such as 360, Flume and Matt Corby. We still have some exciting acts to announce next week and I wish tonight’s winners all the very best on 25 May.”

The Northern Territory Government knows how popular BASSINTHEGRASS is with young people and is committed to supporting the event, which sells out every year.
The Battle of the School Bands is open to Middle and Senior Years (7-12) students enrolled in a government or non-government school. Entrants must compose and perform original music.
